It seems as though the release of new capture cards was timed perfectly with vMix 16! Maybe all of the hardware manufacturers were waiting for it!? We received a very large box full of all of the latest YUAN High-Tech capture cards and all have been tested with vMix 16. These cards were a variety of HDMI and SDI inputs with PCIe, USB3 and MiniPCIe connection options. The models include the SC542, SC5A0 and UB5A0 devices. A full list of vMix supported hardware can be found on our website.
I’ve just been to a week long conference on “How to Write The Best Clickbait Blog Post” and I thought I would try it out! Actually the blog was looking a little bare, so I thought I would mention some features of vMix that I think sets it apart! Also, we are busy working on the final rollout of vMix 16 which means another giveaway plus a bunch of other cool stuff that’s going to happen in the next few weeks!
1. 4K Support!
Being able to bring in 4K inputs to a software video mixer!? Yes! vMix has supported 4K for such a long time now and is the only one to do so! It may become industry standard one day and when it does, vMix will be ready. Well, vMix is ready…right now! Let’s go 4K!
2. Drag and Drop your files!
Sick of having to make 2 or 3 clicks to bring in your video inputs? Concerned about mouse wear and tear? Well, did you know that you can just drag and drop your files directly into the vMix input area and it will add it for you!
3. MIDI support!
Yes! Just when you thought MIDI support was only being enabled for vMix 16….nope! MIDI support has actually already been around for a few versions of vMix! Just to clear up the confusion, I’m referring to the awesome keyboard based music files. MIDI files can really jazz up your production through their amazing melodies!
4. Live preview input windows!
Want to know what is going on in your input previews? Well vMix allows you to see them live!
5. Take it back to the Old School!
Did you know that you could change the colour scheme of vMix? If you were a big fan of the vMix 5 colour palette, you can switch to blue by going to Settings>Display>Theme. I probably wouldn’t though…
6. Twitter AND Facebook!
vMix added social media integration many years ago. We didn’t just include Twitter, but Facebook also! You can also include images from posts! All for the low low cost of free! Download vMix Social if you want to make your live production even more awesome.
7. The puzzling question as to how vMix got it’s name!?
Well most people think that vMix is named after Martin’s cat VMIX, but in fact it’s called vMix because you’re able to video mix with it!
It’s been a busy few weeks here at vMix HQ testing out vMix 16 and some new capture cards. The latest generation of Magewell cards arrived last week and we’ve been testing them out with vMix. Magewell have built solid and reliable cards in the past and these are no exception! Their new Gen 2 line is called the Pro Capture Series, which includes 10 models. These include both SDI and HDMI options. They range from the Pro Capture Quad HDMI card which is a quad HDMI PCIe capture card right down to the Pro capture AIO which is a single input SDI PCIe card with a HDMI to DVI adapter if you wanted a HDMI input instead of SDI. There’s a simple driver installation that works without a problem and once that’s installed, you’re good to go!
I’m sure everyone has been busy downloading their free upgrades for Windows 10. Maybe you’ve just thought….”wait, will my vMix work on it!?”. Yes, vMix supports Windows 10 for vMix 15 and newer.
If you are upgrading from Windows 7, or Windows 8 with Media Center, MPEG-2 recording is no longer available however new MPEG-2 recording options will be included in vMix 16 via FFMPEG.
The performance of MP4 recording on Windows 8 and higher is vastly improved, so if you are upgrading from Windows 7, that may be a good alternative to MPEG-2.
If you have any specific Windows 10 questions, head over to our Windows 10 Forum Post.
“Hey I think we should go to SMPTE 15 next week and exhibit”
“Next week you say? Sure, sounds great!”
-Paraphrased vMix meeting
The trip to SMPTE in Sydney was a little last minute due to other commitments, scheduling and the unwillingness to leave moderate temperatures to enter the Arctic Vortex known as Sydney. The vMix roadshow has spent most of it’s time this year in the US Summer in Las Vegas, New York and Florida so Mid-Winter Sydney wasn’t high on the list of destination cities! Weather aside we had a good week in Sydney and met up with some new hardware resellers for the Australian market.
Due to the time constraints we had to source all of our own equipment and booth materials, so off we went to the vMix storage room to find some supplies! Thankfully we still had some older booth displays that we could use that fit in our smallish booth for Sydney.
Even at such a late stage, we were able to book a good booth just down from Atomos and around the corner from AJA. We could also see the SONY Prize Tornado from our booth which piqued my interest enough to go and try out. It’s always been a dream of mine to go in one of those booths and fish for cash and prizes! I have SMPTE 15 and SONY to thanks for helping me fulfill my dream. I walked away with a Playstation hat, which wasn’t too bad. Had my eye on the ACTUAL Playstation though.
We had plenty of interest in the vMix GO for live sports and productions which was great. The feedback was really positive. It was also nice to catch up with some vMix users and find out how they are using it from day to day. We were even able to give away a copy of vMix at this show! It’s so strange…people don’t seem to want free stuff! vMix 4K is only worth $700US!
Now vMix is back in the lab working on vMix 16 including a Merge Transition! So keep your eye out for that!
